4DnD

4DnD

An overlay platform that elevates virtual TTRPG (table-top role-playing game) experience. Compatible with all existing VTT platforms it combines a Bluetooth physical dice set, 3D technologies and AI filters.

After my 13 years of TTRPG experience playing around the table and in person I was eager to create 4DnD which brings the lost traditional elements from the table to the virtual realm finally making the experience whole again.

Existing Virtual Table-Top platforms lack crucial elements that enhance the gaming experience

Existing Virtual Table-Top platforms lack crucial elements that enhance the gaming experience

Virtual TTRPGs are increasing in popularity, especially during and after the pandemic. However, existing platforms lack the traditional elements that made us all hooked to these genre. Missing on these elements, weakens the overall game experience as well as the in-person interaction compared to table setups.

The platform combines digital and physical technologies (3D Audio, AI Filtering, Bluetooth, and weight sensors) to enhance crucial TTRPG elements. 4DnD integrates with any existing virtual platform players already use, preserving the "in-person" game feel in remote setups.

“When we moved to remote set-up, I have noticed how certain elements were lost.”

competitive audit

During and after covid-19, there was a 250% rise in the number of players using virtual table top platforms

As the popularity of VTT rises, more and more platforms are published. They provide important features such as integrated video chat, character sheets, books, tokens, and even automatic calculations for dice throws. However, they all lack in video and voice customisation, and have no integration with physical components such as dice.

Interviews

Table-Top RPG books were first written in 1974, the traditions and methods are an integral part of the community

Besides my own assumption for the challenges of the project, I had to listen to the community. Through interviews with players from Virtual and in-person set-ups, I dove into perspectives that emphasis the pain points I had in new shades, just proving how badly these things are missing.

4 years experience | D&D 5e

A design student and a member of the Table-Top club in her school. She plays both in-person and online(Foundry VTT).

Loves

Access to maps, Visuals and Automatic Calculation on virtual platforms.

Hates

2 dimensional communication makes the conversation less engaging.

“Communication in person creates energy and flow without interruption”

Fin, 24

A med student playing Table-Top games as a player and as a Dungeon Master, both virtually (Fantasy Ground Unity) and in-person.

Loves

Use of physical elements such as tokens and sheets, but mostly the dice.

Hates

The dice is replaced with a click of a button that is also harder to trust.

“Real dice feels great in the hand and creates suspension and intense feelings while playing”

Tal, 31

10+ years experience | Pathfinder

A software engineer playing with the same group of friends for years. Have been playing both around the table and in online set-up (Roll20 VTT).

Loves

Role Play, customs and properties that enhance playing into the character.

Hates

Communication limitations and the lack of customisation option.

“Physical features help me dive deeper into character, I feel more connected with it”

01. In-person Communication

01. In-person Communication

Existing platforms lack communication support, Voices sound equal all over and conversation doesnt sound natural. On the other hand, in-person communication will enhance the feeling of sitting around the table and improve in-game interactions.

02. Video and Voice customization

02. Video and Voice customization

Surprisingly none of the existing VTT platforms offer video or audio customization settings, a feature that can easily encourage immersive role-playing.

03. Bring the dice back to the table

03. Bring the dice back to the table

Interacting with a physical dice builds tension and sensations that are lost in an unsatisfying click of a button on the digital platforms. The anticipation for a high roll and the suspenseful wait for the best results are thrilling and missed.

4Dnd is an overlay desktop platform designed to sit on top of any existing virtual table-top platform players already use

Overlay platform that elevates remote TTRPG experience. Compatible with existing platforms like Roll20 and Foundry, it combines physical dice with advanced audio technologies and AI filters. With 4DnD, players can play with friends almost as if they were gathered around a real table, keeping the traditional essence of role-playing in a virtual setup while leveraging technology to enhance the overall gaming experience.

Each player have a profile where all their personalised settings are kept. Profiles are connected to multiple servers the player has created (as a Dungeon Master) or was invited to join (as a player).

The 3D audio technology gives the sounds direction and intensity based on the virtual distance between objects. Most headsets support this technology, and it can be found in almost every FPS game.

Along with enhancing the feeling of a real interaction, choosing the seat around the table gives sense to the direction of the sound coming towards the user and the whole fake “in-person” experience. ,

Separation between out-of-game “chit chat” and in-game, enhances the emergence into the game. Furthermore it helps making the switch easier and provides boundaries.

This Dice-Set Box contains a full set of dice that are all connected by Bluetooth to the 4Dnd platform

The box contains whimsical features that make it part of the fantasy realm. The shape is inspired by magical artefacts from the games and a D20 (20-sides dice), the most used dice in most TTRPG. Furthermore, each engraving reveals the place of each dice, and like a magical box with a hidden locking mechanism, helps the user close the box correctly.

The box has 6 hidden magnets to make sure the it is sealed shut when closed correctly, and a wireless charger for the dice inside. To connect all the dice to the software, the user only needs to press the button on the bottom of the box with the dice inside it.

Process - As my first digital UX project, I learned many of the steps on the way. I feel that spending more time on wireframes development and usability testing would have benefit greatly to the design.

Collaboration - Exploring collaborations with existing platforms, could have enhance compatibility, and provide a lot of information from their extended knowledge and huge pool of users.

Accessibility - While most elements in the project are customizable to user's preferences, the platform might not accessible in most ways. Conducting specific testing and following the WCAG, would push for more inclusive platform.

Re-do - I came back to this project after I gained a lot of knowledge as a Product Designer. Being able to look back at my work, and re-doing my UI was so beneficial to the project. While the essence was kept, some experience and better understanding lead to a fresh and improved look.

Personal Connection - The project was born from a personal issue, allowing empathy with the user community. On the contrary, it could have led to Familiarity biases with the problem and its needs.
